Instructor-in-training volunteer program

Are you interested in becoming a ski or snowboard instructor? Do you want to gain experience while earning volunteer hours? As a not-for-profit ski and snowboard facility, Brimacombe can help you do both!

Our snow school volunteers work hand-in-hand with certified instructors, assisting with our lesson programs and gaining valuable on-hill teaching experience. Volunteers are also given the opportunity to improve their own skills and techniques by joining training sessions with our top instructors.

NEW THIS YEAR Skiers who volunteer as counsellors in the Pee Wee Ski Camp on Saturday or Sunday mornings at 10:00 am are eligible to take the Instructors’ Prep Course for free! A full six-week commitment to the Camp program is required. The Pee Wee Ski Camp runs from January 9, 2010 to February 12, 2010.

Volunteer Requirements:

  • Age 14+
  • Strong intermediate skier or snowboarder
  • Minimum two-session commitment required per week (ex: 1 week night & 1 weekend day)

Becoming an Instructor

To become a certified instructor you must pass a Level 1 certification course with either the Canadian Ski Instructors Association (CSIA) or the Canadian Association of Snowboard Instructors (CASI). While Brimacombe holds such certification courses on-site several times each season, we are simply the host site. All interested parties must register through either the CSIA or CASI. Please see below for basic course descriptions and a link to the respective websites.

CSIA Level 1 Certification Course

Duration: 4 days Prerequisites: 15 years of age

The Level 1 course is an introduction to ski teaching, CSIA technique and methodology, and the role of ski teaching within the ski industry. It combines the basics of practical ski teaching methods, technical understanding and development of guest service skills, specifically addressing children’s skiing

The level one certification course includes:

  • an introduction to CSIA skiing and teaching methodology
  • strategies to develop skiers from entry level to intermediate (parallel) using the skill development method
  • techniques and strategies for effective assessment and development <.li>
  • personal feedback on ski performance
  • workshop on customer service
  • workshop on teaching children

CASI Level 1 Instructor Course

Duration: 3 days Prerequisites: 15 years of age

The CASI Level 1 Snowboard Instructor certification course is open to strong intermediate snowboarders, aged 15 years and older. Candidates on the Level 1 Course will spend time exploring snowboarding technique and teaching methods across a variety of venues, both on-snow (up to and including intermediate terrain) and during indoor presentations.

The CASI Level 1 course is an introductory course, designed to give successful candidates the skills necessary to begin their role as a new instructor in the industry. Beginner teaching methods, understanding of basic snowboard technique, as well as lesson planning and effective communication skills will be addressed.

Candidates will receive coaching on their snowboarding, as well as feedback on their teaching skills, with the goal of reaching the Level 1 standard in both of these areas. They will also receive suggestions and strategies for long-term development. The successful candidate is certified to teach beginner snowboarders up to the Novice Turn level.

The Level 1 certification is a pre-requisite for the CASI Level 2 Instructor certification, as well as the Park Instructor course.
